MTN South Sudan has donated 3000 protective reflector Vest jackets, a computer and a printer to the Boda Boda Association of the Republic of South Sudan in an effort to support the association to safeguard motorists and individuals moving along the roads.
The donation ceremony was held at Juba Day Primary School Field were the handover was made to the Boda Boda Association Chairman Abraham Jok by MTN South Sudan CEO Gordian Kyomukama.
“Individuals get injured or die in accidents involving motorbikes (Boda Boda) or moving vehicles because their presence was not signaled appropriately. Many accidents are also caused by insufficient visibility of individuals moving along the roads.
According to the latest WHO data published, Road traffic crashes result in the deaths of approximately 1.35 million people around the world each year and More than half of all road traffic deaths and injuries involve vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists and their passengers.
The reflector vests are meant to provide safety and a better chance of preventing unwanted injury by being highly visible on the road and reduce occurrence of accidents on the road. These items have reflective stripes that enable the wearer to be noticed by the other road users especially at night”, said MTN CEO Gordian Kyomukama.
The vests are also numbered, which would help in identification of Boda Boda riders within the Juba municipality.
On his part MTN Chief Commercial Officer Saint Hilary Doe-Tamakloe stated that;
“This donation of protective equipment comes just after our 30 days #WearItForMe campaign which put a halt to all commercial advertising and sought to encourage and drive sensitization on the use of a mask and its importance to the fight against Covid 19.” Prior to this campaign, MTN launched its initiative to help a number of Small Medium Enterprises (SME)” rise through the initial impacts of the Covid19 pandemic.
